Purposeful Technology & Focused Classrooms

Technology belongs in education when it makes education better. It should not replace exceptional teachers, books, handwriting, discussion, problem-solving, experimentation, collaboration, or face-to-face interaction.

Especially in TK–8, I believe classrooms should emphasize teachers, books, handwriting, discussion, problem-solving, creativity, and meaningful interaction between students and educators.

Children already spend significant time on screens outside of school. We should be thoughtful about how much additional screen time is introduced into the classroom and whether it actually improves educational outcomes.

I support limiting unnecessary device use and requiring technology to have a clear educational purpose. Our youngest students should develop strong foundational skills before becoming overly dependent on computers and tablets.

The goal is simple: technology when it improves learning, traditional instruction when it works better.

As students mature, BHUSD should also teach them how to use modern technology—including emerging tools such as artificial intelligence—thoughtfully, responsibly, and effectively.

Technology mastery without technology dependence.
